Prayer
God,
As this month comes to a close, I want to pause.
I don't want to rush past what You have been teaching me.
Thank You for reminding me that growth takes time. That roots matter. That hidden work is still holy work. That pruning is not punishment. That rest is not failure. That I do not have to carry the burden of making everything bloom.
Thank You for every place in my life where You have been faithful, even when I could not see it.
Today, I give You the things I have been trying to control.
The dreams I have been afraid to release.
The questions I still don't have answers for.
The work whose outcome I cannot determine.
The people I cannot change.
The future I cannot see.
I place all of it back into Your hands.
Teach me to walk with You one step at a time.
Give me enough light for today.
Enough courage for today.
Enough grace for today.
And when tomorrow comes, give me what I need then.
Help me resist the temptation to live so far ahead that I miss the life You have placed directly in front of me.
Let me tend this day well.
Let me love the people in front of me well.
Let me create what You have asked me to create.
Let me rest when You ask me to rest.
Let me surrender when You ask me to surrender.
And let me trust You with the growth.
I don't need to know what comes next to know that You will be there.
So I leave this month with open hands and a grateful heart.
The garden is Yours.
The seeds are Yours.
The growth is Yours.
And so am I.
Amen.
Verse of the Day
Reflection
There is a particular kind of faith required when you can only see a few steps ahead.
We tend to want the whole map.
We want to know where the path leads, how long it will take, what we'll encounter along the way, and whether we'll arrive where we hoped.
But God so often gives us something different.
A lamp.
Enough light for the next step.
Enough grace for today.
Enough direction to keep walking.
That has been the invitation of this month:
Tend what is in front of you.
Tend your heart.
Tend your faith.
Tend your relationships.
Tend the work God has placed in your hands.
Tend the small things.
Tend the beautiful things.
Tend the things that are still hidden beneath the soil.
And then... trust Him with the growth.
I think there is freedom in realizing that we don't have to have the entire garden figured out.
We don't have to know exactly what will bloom.
We don't have to know which seeds will become something bigger than we imagined.
We don't have to force the next season into existence.
We can simply be faithful with this one.
Because the same God who met us in the planting will meet us in the harvest.
The same God who was present in the pruning will be present in the blooming.
And the same God who has been quietly working beneath the surface will still be working when we finally get to see what He was doing all along.
So as August comes to a close, perhaps there is nothing left to prove.
Maybe there is simply something to surrender.
Look around at your garden.
Give thanks for what grew.
Give grace to yourself for what didn't.
Trust God with what is still becoming.
And then turn toward tomorrow with open hands.
You don't have to know what's next. You only have to faithfully tend what God has placed in front of you today.
Encouragement
Today's Invitation
Before August ends, take a few quiet minutes to look back over this month.
What has God been tending in you?
Not what did you accomplish.
Not what did you finish.
Not what can you show for your efforts.
What has been growing beneath the surface?
Write it down.
Thank God for it.
And then, with open hands, give Him whatever comes next.
I'd love to hear what you thought of this month's theme of
tending. Share with me by hitting reply.
