The Invitation May Change

Is there something you've been holding onto simply because you once believed it was the right path? Ask God: “Are You still inviting me here?” Then listen without defending your answer.

Prayer

God,

Keep my hands open enough to change direction.

Give me courage when an old plan no longer fits.

Help me release the need to prove that what I once chose must remain what I choose forever.

Teach me to listen again.

If You are saying stay, help me stay.

If You are saying go, help me go.

If You are saying begin again, give me the humility to begin.

I don't want to cling to a plan more tightly than I cling to You.

Amen.

Verse of the Day

Reflection

Sometimes we think surrender means committing ourselves to one path and refusing to change direction.

But what if surrender means remaining available?

What if the invitation that was right for you six months ago isn't the invitation God is giving you now?

What if the thing you thought was permanent was actually a season?

What if the work changes?

The dream evolves?

The door closes?

A new one opens?

There is no shame in changing direction when you are listening to God.

Faithfulness isn't stubbornly clinging to an old version of obedience.

It is staying close enough to God to hear when the invitation changes.

The Israelites had to follow a cloud.

They moved when it moved.

They stayed when it stayed.

Imagine the freedom of that.

No need to know the entire route.

No need to decide where the journey would end.

Just: Is God moving?

Then move.

Is God asking me to stay?

Then stay.

Perhaps some of us need permission to stop forcing ourselves to finish something simply because we once believed it was the plan.

You are allowed to listen again.

You are allowed to change direction.

You are allowed to begin differently.

The God who invited you then is still capable of inviting you now.
